I have paintings that are both unfinished and abandoned.
It's easy to ignore them, and move onto something new, but the stacked canvases bursting from the corner of my room has forced me to face the inevitable...destroy or reclaim.
This series is about both...
When Covid hit, and sheltering-in-place became a reality, it afforded me the opportunity to take a long, hard look at my"abandoned" pieces. Some were better than I remembered, but many made me cringe. That's when I decided to take a different approach. There was a time that I incorporated duct tape into my work as a way of building texture, but also as collage. I began to block out the parts that I wanted to keep and then I paint over the surface. Some pieces I did this several times. The rewarding part of this process is when I pulled the tape off to reveal the layers underneath. For me, it became symbolic of what we were all going through and it has seen me through these difficult times. The ones that I didn't feel I could salvage, I completely removed the old painting, and re-stretched the canvas. I worked them using the masking and unmasking techniques. It keeps evolving.
This project started in March of 2020 and these paintings are the result of this experiment.
